Career

Tim Bendzko grew up in the Köpenick district. He attended a sports high school and played for 1. FC Union Berlin up to the B-youth level. According to his own statement, he ended his sporting career because his focus was on performance rather than enjoying soccer. As a teenager, he took guitar lessons and wrote his own songs at the age of 16. After graduating from high school, he began studying Protestant theology and non-Christian religions at the Free University of Berlin, which he completed after five semesters without a degree. He then worked for a time as an auctioneer in the car trade.

In 2009, he applied for the talent competition “Söhne gesucht” organized by Söhne Mannheims and was chosen as the successor to Xavier Naidoo was selected. He performed with the band in front of 20,000 people at the Waldbühne in Berlin in 2009 and was signed to a record deal with Sony Music Entertainment shortly afterwards. His musical breakthrough came in June 2011 with his debut album “Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären”, which entered the German charts at number four. The single “Nur noch kurz die Welt retten” stayed in the charts for 47 weeks and was later certified platinum, as was the album. In the same year, Tim discovered the singer Elif. She accompanied him on his tour of German clubs in November 2012.

With his soul ballads, he surprisingly hits a nerve of our time, said one critic about him. He has a gentle and distinctive voice. Bendzko has received numerous awards for his achievements, including the Bambi in the Newcomer category in 2011 and the 1 Live Krone for Best Single. He represented the state of Berlin at the Bundesvision Song Contest with the song Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären. He won the contest ahead of competitors such as Bosse feat. Anna Loos.

In January 2012, he embarked on his first major tour in Offenbach am Main, having previously opened for Elton John and accompanied Joe Cocker on his Hard Knocks Tour. Bendzko was awarded the ECHO in the Newcomer National category. He also represented Germany at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2012 as Best German Act. Tim also appeared on the TV show “Inas Nacht” in Hamburg’s oldest sailor’s pub “Zum Schellfischposten” with Ina Müller to see.

In May 2013, he released his second album Am seidenen Faden, which the Augsburger Allgemeine described as “soulful German pop from his own pen”. The album reached number 1, the single of the same name reached number 11 in the German charts and has since been awarded triple gold. Reviews of the album ranged from critical to negative. Various other concerts followed in 2013, including another at the Waldbühne in Berlin. This event marked the start of his second tour, Ich steh nicht mehr still, which took him through Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg in spring 2014.

In December 2013, he added twelve more songs to his second album and released it as a limited re-edition. By his own account, “Am seidenen Faden” – Unter die Haut was largely produced at home rather than in the studio. It contained “Give A Little”, the first English-language track by Tim Bendzko, as well as contributions from other artists such as Xavas. The first single “Unter die Haut” is a duet with Cassandra Steen. Before the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, he wrote the song Gewinnen for Maria Höfl-Riesch, which was to be released as a single after the Games.

Bendzko was alongside Henning Wehland and Lena Meyer-Landrut juror at The Voice Kids. He was also a contestant on “Schlag den Star” and competed against Stefan Kretzschmar. In December 2018, he joined Bryan Ferry, Milow and the Pointer Sisters on the Night of the Proms concert tour through Germany and Luxembourg.

He released his first single, “Hoch”, in July 2019. It can be found on his fourth album “Filter”.
