Career of Sarah Engels

Engels took part in the casting show “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” three times: in the sixth season in 2009, she made it to the final 120 candidates, but failed in the first live show due to text problems. In 2010, she took part in the seventh season, but failed again in the second round due to text problems.

Engels applied again in 2011. She passed the first round, in which she sang Run by Leona Lewis, as well as further rounds, including in the Maldives. As one of 15 selected candidates, she performed in the first live show Who will make it into the Top 10? She sang One Moment in Time by Whitney Houston and received the ninth most calls from viewers. Engels only reached the first mottoshow at the invitation of the jury, as only the seven candidates with the most viewer calls automatically progressed to the first mottoshow.

She sang “When You Believe” by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, received the fewest viewer votes and was eliminated. However, when contestant Nina Richel had to leave “DSDS – Deutschland sucht den Superstar” for health reasons, Sarah Engels was allowed to compete again in the third moto show.

In the following live shows, she was always one of the two contestants with the most calls. She was the fifth woman in the final of Deutschland sucht den Superstar. On May 7, 2011, she took second place with 48.1 percent of the calls behind Pietro Lombardi. The final show was staged in the style of Engels and Pietro Lombardi’s relationship, with the finalists appearing in wedding attire, for example.

Her first single “Call My Name” was released during the final of Deutschland sucht den Superstar, produced by Dieter Bohlen. The announced duet with Lombardi, also released in May 2011, appeared as her second single in June under the title “I Miss You”. From 2013, Sarah Engels and her husband Pietro Lombardi formed the musical duo Sarah & Pietro. The debut single “Dream Team” was released in March 2013 and reached number 41 in Germany, number 60 in Austria and number 65 in Switzerland. The accompanying album, also entitled “Dream Team”, was released to mixed reviews and consists mainly of ballads and some faster songs. In June 2015, they released the German-language single “Neverland”, the theme song for the second season of their docu-soap. The duo album “Teil von mir” was released in March 2016 and received mixed reviews. It reached number 27 in the charts in Austria and number 35 in Switzerland and Germany.

Since 2018, Sarah Engels has embarked on a new musical path as Sarah. Her single “Genau hier” reached number 1 in the German iTunes charts in April 2018 and placed in the German, Austrian and Swiss singles charts. The album “Zurück zu mir” followed in May 2018 with twelve new songs, including “Miss You Love”, which she co-wrote. The recordings took place in Nashville, with critics praising her voice and the song “Hinterher” in particular. The accompanying RTL II documentary provided insights into the album production and a performance in the Honky Tonk Central bar.

The album reached the top 20 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Sarah released music videos for the songs “Einzigartig schön” and “Soleil”. In collaboration with Stereoact, the song “Wunschkonzert” was released in August 2018, followed by “Auf einer Welle” in September. Sarah Engels continued her musical diversity and released the single “Weekend” with DJ Herzbeat in 2019 and the Italian-language duet “Ich liebe nur dich” with Pietro Basile in September of the same year.

Sarah Engels has been under contract with the record label Ariola since the end of April 2020. In May 2020, she took part in the Free European Song Contest for Italy and reached 13th place with her single “Te amo mi amor”. The song, written and produced by Philippe Heithier, reached number 1 on iTunes and placed in the German, Austrian and Swiss charts. The accompanying video features Robert Beitsch and Joti Polizoakis, their dance partners on Let’s Dance and Dancing on Ice. “Te amo mi amor” was awarded the “One of the Best” prize as the hit of the year.

In October 2020, she released the song “Zoom”, followed by the single “Ich” in February 2021, which reached number 92 in the German charts. In March 2021, she released the song “Love Is Love”, which did not make it into the official German singles charts, but reached number 10 in the singles trend charts. In April 2021, the album “Im Augenblick” was released, which charted in the German, Austrian and Swiss album charts. Most of the songs were written by Philippe Heithier, while “Flügel in Gedanken” was written by Cassandra Steen, “Alles auf rot” by Elif and “Einen Anruf entfernt” by Jérôme Klusáček, the son of Chris Roberts, among others.

In July 2023, Sarah Engels took over the voice of the main character Marinette in the film “Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir – The Movie”. At the end of August, she released her new single “Para Siempre” (Forever).

In summer 2012, Sarah Engels formed a team with Pietro Lombardi in the RTL reality show Star Race, in which they took part in a race across the Philippines. In the same year, they appeared on the Sat.1 show “Mein Mann kann”. In July 2013, Engels won against her husband in the ProSieben entertainment show Clash! Boom! Bang! and took part in the RTL reality show Der VIP-Bus – Promis auf Pauschalreise in November 2013.

Private life of Sarah Engels

Sarah Engels grew up with her parents and younger brother in Hürth. Her maternal grandparents are originally from Sicily. She was already performing at school and street festivals at the age of eleven and took singing lessons for four years. She completed secondary school.

In 2013, she married the singer Pietro Lombardi, whom she had met on “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” in 2011, and took his surname. Their son was born in June 2015. The couple separated in 2016 and divorced in 2019.

In November 2020, she got engaged to the footballer Julian Büscher. The couple married in May 2021 and have used Sarah Engels’ maiden name as their surname ever since. They had a daughter in December 2021.
