Career

Samy was born in Hamburg to a German mother and a Sudanese father. When he was two years old, his Sudanese Muslim father left Germany and he grew up without a father. He moved with his mother from Barmbek to Hamburg-Eppendorf in 1980. Inspired by American rap by artists such as Public Enemy, Sorge began rapping in English himself. He initially formed the duo No Nonsens with producer DJ Dynamite before the two musicians founded the band Dynamite Deluxe together with Tropf in 1997.

With the single “Füchse” from the album “Bambule” by the Beginner Samy Deluxe first attracted attention in 1999. This was followed a year later by the single “Grüne Brille” by Dynamite Deluxe and Jan Delay and the debut of the Deluxe Soundsystem trio. The album, released on the Hamburg hip-hop label Eimsbush, reached number 4 in the German charts and became a critics’ favorite. After its release, Dynamite Deluxe disbanded.

However, both Tropf and DJ Dynamite continued to work with their former frontman. In April 2001, the then major label EMI released the solo debut “Samy Deluxe”, on which the rappers Afrob, Dendemann, Illo and Nico Suave made guest appearances. The single “Weck mich auf”, produced by Sleepwalker, became a successful flagship for the rapper’s career. After Samy Deluxe was involved in the Brothers Keepers project alongside musicians such as Xavier Naidoo, D-Flame and Torch, he founded the duo ASD together with Afrob in 2003.

They also released their first album together on EMI Who would have thought it? In the fall of the same year, Eimsbush filed for bankruptcy. Samy Deluxe then founded Deluxe Records as a sub-label of Capitol Records, which belonged to EMI at the time. He released his second solo album “Verdammtnochma!” via the label in 2004. Social commitment

Samy Sorge has been actively campaigning against xenophobia and right-wing extremism since the beginning of his career due to his personal experiences. A decisive step in this commitment was his involvement in the music collective “Brothers Keepers” from 2001, in particular with the successful single “Adriano (Letzte Warnung)”, which drew attention to the fate of Alberto Adriano, who was a victim of right-wing extremist violence.

Samy Sorge acted as an ambassador for World AIDS Day in 2006 and 2007, helping to raise awareness of this important issue. He also performed at the “Live Earth” charity event in Hamburg in 2007.

Another important commitment was supporting the “iCHANCE” campaign of the German Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education. For him, mastering the German language was a basic requirement for his career.

In 2008, Samy Sorge felt the desire to become active and founded the “Crossover” association together with Julia von Dohnanyi and basketball player Marvin Willoughby. This organized hip-hop workshops that brought together students from different social backgrounds. The “DeluxeKidz” association emerged from “Crossover” in 2013 with the aim of introducing children and young people to music, language, dance and art, encouraging their creativity and boosting their self-confidence.

The association offered courses in areas such as breakdancing, rap, DJing, singing, graffiti and beatboxing at the Esche Jugendkunsthaus and in schools. The work with the DeluxeKidz led to two impressive performances at the Kulturfabrik Kampnagel. Samy Sorge has not only actively supported important social causes through his music, but also through his social commitment.
