Howard Carpendale, born Howard Victor Carpendale on January 14, 1946 in Durban, South Africa, is one of the most successful pop singers with over 65 million records sold, 20 top 10 albums and more than 700 recordings. pop singers in the German-speaking world. He celebrated his greatest successes in the 1970s and 1980s with hits such as “Ti amo” (1977) and “Hello Again” (1984).

After unsuccessful attempts as an Elvis impersonator and beat singer in South Africa, Carpendale first went to the UK in 1966 and later to Germany. His first recording contract with Electrola enabled him to release his debut single “Lebenslänglich” in 1967, which sold 60,000 copies. He landed his first big hit with the German cover version of “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” (1969). In 1970, he won the German pop song competition with “Das schöne Mädchen von Seite Eins”.

In the 1970s, Carpendale began composing his own songs, including “Da nahm er seine Gitarre”, “Du fängst den Wind niemals ein” and “Nachts, wenn alles schläft”. With his German versions of international hits such as “Ti amo” and “Tür an Tür mit Alice”, he cemented his status as one of the most successful German pop singers. At the same time, he wrote film music, including for the series “Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl”.

After a break in the 1990s, during which he devoted himself to acting (including the lead role in “Dark Realm”, 2001), he returned in 2007 with the album “20 Uhr 10”, which reached number 4 in the charts. Carpendale was a junior shot put champion in South Africa and played rugby in the national league in Germany. He was also active as a Formula 3 driver in the 1970s. For decades, he has lived with multiple sclerosis, which has taken a mild course in his case. He has also spoken publicly about his depression and is committed to breaking the taboos surrounding mental illness.

In 2024, “Hello! Again?”, a jukebox musical featuring his hits, will premiere in Leipzig. It is directed by comedian Thomas Hermanns. Even after more than five decades, Carpendale remains a formative figure in German pop music.
