What is GEMA and what is its significance?

The “Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte” (GEMA) is the central collecting society in Germany. It is a trustee for over 90,000 members, including composers, lyricists, music publishers and their legal successors. GEMA’s main task is to administer the copyrights of these members and to ensure that they receive appropriate remuneration for the use of their works.

This makes GEMA an important player in the field of copyright in Germany. It safeguards the rights of authors, facilitates access to music for users and contributes to cultural diversity. Historical development of GEMA

GEMA can look back on a long history and a wealth of experience. As early as 1903, composers founded the “Deutsche Anstalt für musikalisches Aufführungsrecht” (AFMA), the first collecting society in Germany and GEMA’s predecessor organization. Today, GEMA has the legal form of a commercial association and is subject to the supervision of the German Patent and Trade Mark Office and the Federal Cartel Office.

GEMA not only contributes to the economic security of authors, but also has an important social and cultural function. It supports a large number of music creators in continuing their creative work and making their works accessible to a wide audience.
