Childhood and youth

She was born as the third child of Alfred Roy Carey, an Afro-Venezuelan technician, and Patricia Hickey, an Irish opera singer and singing teacher. A curious coincidence shaped her name, as she was named after the title of the song “They Call the Wind Mariah” from the Broadway musical “Paint Your Wagon”.

Mariah grew up in a multicultural family and moved several times over the years. After her parents divorced in 1973, she and her brother Morgan grew up with their mother, while her sister Alison stayed with their father. At the tender age of four, Mariah began singing along to songs she heard on the radio. At elementary school, she excelled in literature, art and music.

Despite financial difficulties, her mother eventually managed to earn enough money to move to a better area of New York. This laid the foundation for Mariah Carey’s musical ambitions. During her high school years at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, she became active as a singer-songwriter and began to write her own songs.

Mariah Carey steadily developed her vocal skills through singing lessons with her mother and has now even mastered whistling. The world of classical opera, which her mother opened up to her, influenced her style without putting her under pressure to become an opera singer.

After leaving school in 1986, Carey decided to pursue a career as a backing singer. Together with Gavin Christopher, she founded a songwriting duo and made contacts in the music scene. Finally, in 1988, she received her first recording contract with Columbia Records, which was signed by manager Thomas Mottola.
