Cliff Richard, born Harry Rodger Webb on October 14, 1940 in Lucknow, India, is a British pop musician. pop musician and pop singer with an impressive career spanning from the late 1950s to the present day. To date, he has sold over 250 million records worldwide, making him one of Britain’s most successful artists. In 1995, he was the first pop star to be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

His musical career began in 1958 when he was discovered and promoted by producer Norrie Paramor. In the same year, Cliff Richard released his first single Move It and landed his first number 1 hits in the UK with further hits such as Living Doll and Travellin’ Light. Until 1969, he was accompanied at most of his performances by the Shadows, who were also successful as a band.

In the early 1960s, Richard also recorded songs in various languages, including German and Japanese. He reached his first number 1 position in Germany in 1963 with Rote Lippen soll man küssen, the German version of Lucky Lips. Later successes in Germany were Das ist die Frage aller Fragen and We Don’t Talk Anymore.

His most popular songs include hits such as Dreamin’, Some People, My Pretty One, Miss You Nights and the Christmas classic Mistletoe and Wine. A milestone in his career was the musical Heathcliff, an adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, which he produced with Tim Rice in 1996 and 1997 and in which he played the leading role.

Richard reached the top of the British charts again in 1999 with the title Millennium Prayer. This makes him the only artist to have had number 1 hits in the UK in five consecutive decades. In total, only Elvis PresleyThe Beatles and Westlife have had more number 1 hits than him. Richard never achieved the same popularity in the USA; his biggest success there was the hit Devil Woman in 1976, which reached number 6.

In 2006, Richard once again made music history when he reached second place in the British charts with 21st Century Christmas, becoming the only artist to have top ten hits in six consecutive decades. Alongside Elton John, he is one of the most successful British artists and holds attendance records in many UK concert halls. He twice took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for Great Britain, coming second in 1968 with Congratulations and third in 1973 with Power to All Our Friends.

In his private life, Cliff Richard is deeply rooted in the Christian faith. Alongside his musical career, he dedicated himself to the Christian message and published a children’s book with biblical stories. He also supported numerous charity projects and performed with the well-known preacher Billy Graham. There has been speculation about his sexual orientation for years, but Richard has never spoken publicly about it. He has been living with a former priest since 2001.
