(\u03c6\u03c9\u03bd\u03ae), literally <strong>&#8220;air sound&#8221;<\/strong>. This term is used in the <a title=\"Hornbostel-Sachs system\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/en\/hornbostel-sachs-system\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>Hornbostel-Sachs system<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a> of 1914 for all musical instruments whose sound is produced by direct vibration of the air.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d6cc7ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d6cc7ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are basically <strong>two main groups<\/strong> in this classification: On the one hand the (actual) <a title=\"Wind instruments\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/en\/musical-instruments\/wind-instruments\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>wind instruments<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>in which the vibrating air is confined within the instrument, and the <strong>free aerophones<\/strong>, in which the vibrating air is not confined by the instrument.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e57289 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8e57289\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Further categorization is based on the type of sound production and is carried out at the next higher level according to the scheme of <a title=\"Erich Moritz von Hornbostel\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/musikwissenschaftler\/erich-moritz-von-hornbostel\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>Erich Moritz von Hornbostel<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a> and <a title=\"Curt Sachs\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/musikwissenschaftler\/curt-sachs\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>Curt Sachs<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a> scheme.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e04d84b elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"e04d84b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2bcb6a7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2bcb6a7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The classification of aerophones according to sound production at a glance<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-69dfdbe elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"69dfdbe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Distraction aerophones<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e290a43 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e290a43\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The air flowing past is divided and changed in such a way that sound is generated. In the case of free deflection aerophones, the oscillation caused by air refraction is not limited by an instrument body. This includes the real whip.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ec4ce73 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ec4ce73\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Interrupt aerophones<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-351d435 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"351d435\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Interrupter aerophones interrupt the air flow at regular intervals and thus produce a sound.<\/p>\n<p>Most interrupting aerophones are self-sounding, i.e. the airflow itself moves the element that interrupts the airflow at regular intervals. These include the reed aerophones: on instruments with a reed, the airflow is regularly interrupted by the vibrations of the reed. There are reed aerophones with a percussive reed, the percussive reed instruments, e.g. <a title=\"Accordion\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/musikinstrumente\/akkordeon\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>accordion<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>harmonica and mouth organ. Mirlitones, on the other hand, in which the flowing air causes a membrane to vibrate, belong to the category of membranophones. <a title=\"Membranophones\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/musikinstrumente\/membranophone\/\"><br \/>\n  <b><br \/>\n    <u>membranophones<\/u><br \/>\n  <\/b><br \/>\n<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of non-self-sounding interrupting aerophones, the interrupting element is not moved by the air flow itself. These include the whirring wood, the whirrer and the siren.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8111212 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8111212\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Explosive aerophones\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac9d5e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ac9d5e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The air is compressed once here. The children&#8217;s toy firecracker is one example. The crack of a whip is also caused by the compression of the air at the end of the belt.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee0082a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ee0082a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Wind instruments<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c0d822 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7c0d822\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The classification of wind instruments is based on the Hornbostel-Sachs system and is divided into woodwind instruments, brass instruments and reed instruments according to the type of sound production:<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d736781 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d736781\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Reed instruments<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ec02159 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ec02159\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Wind instruments can be divided into different categories, with the reed instruments forming a large group. With <a title=\"Flute\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/musikinstrumente\/floete\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>flutes<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a> the airflow is directed over an edge that divides and changes the airflow to produce the sound. This edge can be the side blowing hole on the transverse flute or the front edge of the tube on rim-blown flutes such as the pan flute. The recorder, on the other hand, uses labial pipes with a fixed blowing edge in the air stream.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ecdf25 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9ecdf25\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Reed instruments<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e153cb3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e153cb3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Another group is formed by the reed instruments, in which either a simple reed (reed), as in the saxophone and the <a title=\"Clarinet\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/musikinstrumente\/klarinette\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>clarinet<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>or a double reed (counter-reed), as on the oboe. <a title=\"Oboe\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/musikinstrumente\/oboe\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>oboe<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a> and the <a title=\"Bassoon\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/musikinstrumente\/fagott\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>bassoon<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>is used. Brass instruments include trumpets, which are also known as lip horns. Here, the player&#8217;s lips cause the airflow to vibrate and interrupt it again and again, resulting in a characteristic sound. Examples are the cornett and the <a title=\"Trumpet\" href=\"https:\/\/musiknerd.org\/musikinstrumente\/trompete\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n    <strong>trumpet<\/strong><br \/>\n  <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a472b13 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a472b13\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Membranopipes<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4165808 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4165808\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Membranopipes, in which a membrane interrupts the air flow, form a special group. When the air pressure is increased, this membrane periodically allows air to escape through an opening which it keeps closed when at rest. Interestingly, the &#8220;sucked trumpets&#8221;, which produce sound by sucking in air, also belong to the group of trumpet instruments, although they differ in shape from conventional trumpets. This special classification of diaphragm pipes and sucket trumpets is not included in the original Hornbostel-Sachs classification.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
